I am M R. X. Dentith, PhD (Auckland), author of The Philosophy of Conspiracy Theories (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014), the first single author, book-length treatment of the philosophical issues surrounding conspiracy theory, and the editor of Taking Conspiracy Theories Seriously (Rowman and Littlefield, 2018), an edited collection of the most recent work on Conspiracy Theory Theory.
I am currently a Teaching Fellow at the University of Waikato, and have been a Fellow both at the Institute for Research in the Humanities (ICUB) at the University of Bucharest, and New Europe College (also in Bucharest). Whilst I was working on my PhD I was a Professional Teaching Fellow at the University of Auckland.
My current research focuses on conspiracy theory, conspiracy theory theory, fake news, and secrecy.
This site hosts my blog, list of public lectures and media appearances, links to my published research, and the podcast I co-host with Josh Addison.
‘Taking Conspiracy Theories Seriously,’ Rowman and Littlefield, 2018 – a new edited collection of the most cutting edge work on conspiracy theory. The book has been described by Joe Uscinski as ‘an essential collection for anyone seeking to truly understand conspiracy theories and the people who believe them.’
‘The Problem of Conspiracism,’ Argumenta 3(2), 2018, pp. 327-343. DOI: 10.23811/58.arg2017.den – a paper in which I distinguish between conspiracy theorists and a potential subset of problematic conspiracy theorists, the conspiracists.
‘Conspiracy theories on the basis of the evidence,’ Synthese, 2017, DOI: 10.1007/s11229-017-1532-7 – a survey of the way in which the evidence is used with respect to conspiracy theories, and how many of those supposedly suspicious evidential practices are routinely used against conspiracy theories.
